Why SpiceJet Has Been Put Under ‘Enhanced Surveillance’ With Immediate Effect
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has decided to place SpiceJet under "enhanced surveillance." This measure includes more frequent spot checks and night monitoring to ensure the airline's operational safety. The decision follows reports of flight cancellations and financial struggles faced by the airline. A special audit of SpiceJet's engineering facilities was conducted on August 7 and 8, revealing certain deficiencies.

"In light of the past record and the special audit carried out in August 2024, SpiceJet has once again been placed under enhanced surveillance with immediate effect. This would entail an increase in the number of spot checks/ night surveillance with a view to ensure the safety of operations," stated the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in a release.
Enhanced Surveillance for Safety
In 2022, after several incidents involving SpiceJet's fleet, a special campaign of spot checks was initiated. During this period, SpiceJet could only operate its aircraft once the DGCA confirmed that all reported issues were resolved. In 2023, due to financial stress reports, the airline was again placed under enhanced surveillance. Now, based on past records and a recent audit, increased monitoring has been reinstated immediately.
Earlier on August 16, the Delhi High Court declined an urgent listing for SpiceJet's plea against an order to ground three aircraft engines by today and hand them over to lessors within 15 days. The plea was mentioned for urgent hearing before a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora. However, the bench stated that listing the plea during the day was not feasible and scheduled it for hearing on August 20.
Previous Incidents and Financial Stress
It is important to note that in previous years, SpiceJet has faced multiple challenges leading to increased scrutiny from regulatory authorities. The DGCA's actions aim to ensure that all operational safety standards are met consistently. The recent audit findings have prompted immediate action to maintain high safety levels for passengers and crew alike.
The ongoing financial difficulties have also contributed to heightened vigilance from regulatory bodies. Ensuring that airlines operate safely despite financial constraints is crucial for maintaining public trust in air travel services.
The DGCA's decision underscores its commitment to passenger safety by enforcing stringent checks on airlines facing operational or financial issues. Enhanced surveillance measures are part of broader efforts to uphold aviation safety standards across India.
SpiceJet's current situation highlights the importance of regulatory oversight in maintaining safe aviation practices. Continuous monitoring and audits help identify potential risks early, allowing timely corrective actions to be taken.
The DGCA's proactive approach serves as a reminder that ensuring aviation safety requires constant vigilance and adherence to established protocols. By placing SpiceJet under enhanced surveillance, authorities aim to mitigate any risks associated with operational deficiencies or financial instability.
This latest development reflects ongoing efforts by regulatory bodies to safeguard passengers' well-being while addressing challenges within the aviation industry. Enhanced surveillance is a critical tool in maintaining high standards of safety and reliability for air travel services.
SpiceJet must now comply with increased scrutiny from DGCA officials through regular inspections and night-time monitoring activities designed to ensure compliance with all safety regulations.
The airline industry continues evolving rapidly; thus, maintaining rigorous oversight remains essential for protecting passengers' interests while fostering sustainable growth within this sector.
