Why is NATO worried about Ukraine’s higher consumption of ammunition?

Ukraine armed forces are using disproportionately higher amounts of ammunition but where it is being used is still a mystery.

Higher ammunition consumption should necessarily mean some success at the war front; however, Ukraine is not anywhere near it despite all the supplies from NATO and its allied countries. Now, the group has shown its concern over the issue and warned Ukraine of consuming too much ammunition without much success at the front against Russia. This could surprise Ukrainian leadership as they have perpetually been asking for more ammunition from their Western partners and NATO.

The insinuation that Ukraine is using too much of NATO's ammunition that it supplied came from the statement from Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. Sharing his views, he admitted that the war in Ukraine is consuming an enormous amount of ammunition. This, according to him, is putting the NATO members' defence industries under strain as they all need to ramp up production and invest in production augmentation.

Why is NATO worried about Ukraine’s higher consumption of ammunition?

NATO has come to support Ukraine in its war against Russia and over the past couple of months, asking its members to up their supplies of ammunition and war machines. Ukraine, which was a no match for Russia's defence capabilities, has been able to stand and fight merely because NATO has helped it in all forms that include weapons and training.

NATO ammo sold in black market?

Ukrainian armed forces are using disproportionately higher amounts of ammunition but where it is being used is still a mystery. There are reports that some of the supplies are being sold in the arms and ammunition black markets. Although the earlier reports came from the Russian media outlets, some independent media reports too later claimed that some of the weapons NATO supplied to Ukraine were seen at the black markets in Africa and Syria.

Earlier, the NATO and EU also showed their concern over the misappropriation of the weapons supplied to Ukrainian forces and asked for better tracking. The weapons that could end up with criminal groups could embarrass NATO. There were some discussions over the effective tracking of the NATO supplied weapons to Ukraine but that does not seem to be working well.

What could be made from NATO's realization that Ukraine is using excessive amounts of ammunition could also be an indication that standing with Ukraine has proven costly for the group. The Biden government in the US alone has offered massive military aid to Ukraine that goes up to $27.5 billion. Does it know where all it is going?
