Why Is Jammu Facing A Surge In Terror Attacks? Here Are The Reasons
A significant rise in terror attacks in Jammu & Kashmir, including ambushes on army convoys and police posts, highlights a concerning shift in militant activities and strategy. The challenges are compounded by terrain, technology, and intelligence gaps.
Since the start of the year, a rise in terror attacks in Jammu & Kashmir has caused significant concern.
Recently, incidents such as an ambush on an Indian Army convoy in Kathua and an attack on a police post in Udhampur's Basantgarh have highlighted this issue.

Pakistan-based terror organisations are exploiting Jammu's challenging terrain to infiltrate armed militants across the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC). These terrorists disguise themselves as civilians and gather weapons with assistance from local guides, as reported by First Post
Shift in Terrorism Focus
Since the abrogation of Article 370, these groups have shifted their focus from the heavily guarded Kashmir Valley to the relatively less protected Jammu region. This change in strategy is evident in the increased number of attacks occurring there, as reported by First Post.
The reduction of troops in Jammu due to redeployment to Eastern Ladakh after the 2020 standoff with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has further complicated security efforts. Fresh infiltration by terrorists has been reported ahead of the monsoon season, adding to the challenges faced by security forces.
Technological Advancements and Intelligence Gaps
Terrorist groups are now using modern technology to discover new routes for infiltration and reignite insurgency activities. Additionally, there is a noticeable gap in intelligence gathering within Jammu, making it easier for terrorists to target softer and less guarded areas.
The increase in terror incidents could be an attempt by militants to deter authorities from holding Assembly polls in the Union Territory later this year, as per media reports. The shift of terrorism activities from Kashmir to Jammu reflects a strategic move by these groups, as reported by First Post.
The forests of the Pir Panjal range have become a new hotspot for terrorist activities. The complex terrain provides cover for militants, allowing them to carry out attacks with relative ease compared to other regions.
In conclusion, addressing these issues requires enhanced intelligence gathering, increased troop presence, and leveraging technology to counteract terrorist strategies effectively. The situation demands immediate attention to ensure safety and stability in Jammu.
