Why DGCA Has Banned Photography And Videography At Some Indian Airports — What Travelers Need To Know
New, more stringent rules on passenger conduct on specific flights within India have been put into place by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Particularly, flights that depart or arrive at military airbases are subject to these rules. The policy is being strictly enforced at vulnerable airports, especially those close to India's western border, with the goal of protecting national security.
Airports Where New Rules Apply
According to the DGCA, the following airports are affected by the new directive:
- Amritsar Airport
- Jammu Airport
- Srinagar Airport
- Jaisalmer Airport

Key Regulations to Be Followed
During takeoff and landing, travellers using these airports are required to have their window blinds down. This regulation is in effect until the aircraft either reaches 10,000 feet in the air or completely stops on the ground. The action was taken in reaction to many incidents in which tourists took and posted images or films of sensitive military installations, aeroplanes, and airfield layouts on social media.
The security establishment is concerned about these disclosures because they could inadvertently jeopardise classified defence information. Because of this, it is highly forbidden to take pictures or videos at certain airbases.
Strict Legal Consequences for Rule Violations
The DGCA has clearly warned that any passenger found violating these rules will face strict legal consequences, which may include fines and penalties under civil aviation laws. The agency has urged both airlines and passengers to treat these directives with utmost seriousness.
Implementation Measures for Airlines
To ensure full compliance, the DGCA has instructed all airlines to revise their standard operating procedures. Key implementation steps include:
- Mandatory lowering of window shades during takeoff and landing.
- Special training sessions for cabin crew and ground staff to handle these security measures.
- Display of informative notices at boarding gates and inside aircraft cabins.
- Inclusion of these instructions in pre-flight safety announcements.
- Several airlines have already begun integrating these directives into their onboard announcements and flight protocols.
Advisory for Passengers
Passengers are strongly advised not to take photos or videos on any flight involving these sensitive military airports. If any passenger has doubts or queries regarding these rules during the flight, they are encouraged to immediately consult with the cabin crew.
The DGCA, along with the Indian government, has reiterated that these rules are not merely formalities but are essential for protecting national security. Full cooperation from travelers is expected and appreciated.
