Why Are Trees Growing On A New Bihar Road? ₹100-Crore Blunder
In what can only be described as a surreal sight, a newly constructed ₹100-crore road near Patna, Bihar, has become the talk of the town-thanks to several fully grown trees standing tall in the middle of the highway. The road, meant to ease transport and boost infrastructure, now looks more like a driving challenge than a modern roadway.
No Clearance, No Chainsaws
The bizarre situation arose when officials failed to secure the mandatory environmental clearance to fell the trees before road construction began. The state environment department refused to permit the removal of the trees, demanding compensation for the loss of about 14 hectares of forest land. With the approval stalled and fearing legal repercussions, engineers and contractors went ahead and built the road around the trees, leaving them rooted in place-some on the median, others directly obstructing traffic.

Cutting down the trees without clearance would have been illegal, inviting penalties and judicial trouble. But constructing a major highway with tree trunks on the carriageway has turned into a costly planning blunder.
Development vs. Environment
This incident starkly highlights the growing tension between fast-paced development and environmental regulation in India. Bihar has already faced criticism for rapid deforestation in the name of infrastructure expansion. This road has now become a symbol of bureaucratic misalignment, where environment departments and civil engineering teams operate in silos, to the detriment of public safety.
The road is open to commuters-but the trees remain, posing a hazard to vehicles and drawing widespread ridicule and concern. Officials are reportedly still negotiating a solution, but for now, the bizarre sight stands as a dramatic reminder of the real-world consequences of ignoring clearances in the race to build.
