Who Was Dr. RG Kar? The Visionary Who Established Asia's First Private Medical College In Kolkata
Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, founded in 1886, is currently embroiled in protests and disruptions after a post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered on its premises. The accused, Sanjay Roy, has been apprehended. This institution, the first non-government medical college in Asia, was established by Dr Radha Gobinda Kar and came under the Government of West Bengal's control in 1958.

The college is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. It provides undergraduate and postgraduate medical education along with post-doctorate, PG Diploma, and Fellowship programs. The institution has a rich history marked by significant milestones such as merging with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bengal in 1904.
Historical Milestones
In 1935, the Sir Kedar Nath Das maternity hospital was established within the college premises. Additionally, it boasts the first-ever psychiatry OPD in Asia. Post India's independence, the college was renamed Dr RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in 1948. The institution celebrated its centenary year in 2016.
The hospital complex covers 15 acres and includes 10 buildings and seven hostels. It admits 150 students annually for its MBBS course and offers seats in various other medical and paramedical disciplines. The campus also houses a School of Nursing and a College of Nursing.
Current Situation
The recent tragic incident has led to widespread protests among students and staff, severely affecting medical services at the hospital. The community is demanding justice for the victim while calling for increased security measures on campus to prevent such incidents in the future.
Dr Radha Gobinda Kar's vision led to the establishment of this pioneering institution which has contributed significantly to medical education in India. Despite current challenges, RG Kar Medical College continues to be a cornerstone of healthcare education.
