Who Is Tamil Nadu Minister V. Senthil Balaji?

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday arrested Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), making him the first minister in the M K Stalin-led government to face such an action from a central agency.

Who is V. Senthil Balaji??

Born on 21 October 1975 in the Karur district of Tamil Nadu, Balaji currently serves as the Minister for Electricity, Prohibition & Excise in the Government of Tamil Nadu. He is a dedicated member of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party and has been actively involved in the political landscape as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Tamil Nadu since 2021. Balaji's political career spans several successful electoral victories, with his initial election to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly taking place in 2006. He has since been re-elected in 2011, 2016, and 2021, showcasing his consistent support among constituents.

Balaji pursued his higher education at the Government Arts College, Karur, where he graduated with a degree in Commerce.

He embarked on his political journey in 1997, initially serving as a local body member. Balaji's ascendancy to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly occurred in 2006, representing the Karur constituency.

Notably, he assumed the position of Minister for Transport in the AIADMK government, led by the late Jayalalithaa, in 2011. However, he faced a cabinet removal in July 2015. Undeterred, Balaji secured his re-election to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly in 2016, this time representing the Aravakurichi constituency. Following the unfortunate demise of Jayalalithaa, he played a pivotal role in maintaining the stability of the AIADMK government.

During the factional split of the AIADMK in 2017, Balaji aligned himself with the faction led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami. The year 2021 marked another electoral victory for Balaji, as he was re-elected from the Karur constituency. Subsequently, in May 2021, he was appointed as the Minister for Electricity, Prohibition & Excise in the AIADMK government, headed by Palaniswami.

While V. Senthil Balaji's political career has garnered attention, he has also faced controversy. Accusations of corruption and abuse of power have been leveled against him. Additionally, his assertive and outspoken demeanor has drawn criticism.
