Who Is Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian? Sacked Executive Director (India) At International Monetary Fund (IMF)

In a notable development, the Government of India has decided to end Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian's tenure as Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). A circular from the Ministry of Personnel dated April 30, 2025 mentioned Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian's termination with immediate effect, following the decision made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Before his appointment at the IMF in August 2022, Dr. Subramanian played a crucial role within the Indian government as the 17th Chief Economic Advisor from 2018 to 2021. During his time as Chief Economic Advisor, he was a staunch advocate for structural reforms and meticulous economic policy planning, contributing significantly to shaping the nation's financial landscape.

The decision to terminate Dr. Subramanian's services comes in the wake of the IMF's recent adjustments to its global economic forecasts. In its World Economic Outlook for April 2025, the IMF revised its growth projection for India's GDP for the fiscal year 2025-26, lowering it to 6.2%. This represented a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from its earlier predictions in January. The revision was attributed to a mix of international and domestic setbacks, including global trade disruptions triggered by retaliatory tariffs from the United States and various internal challenges India faces.

Despite the adjustment in India's growth forecasts, the IMF's report underscored a generally stable outlook for the country. It highlighted India's strong private consumption, particularly in rural areas, as a key factor underpinning its growth prospects. The report also noted that the revision of India's growth projection was part of a larger pattern, with the IMF scaling back its growth expectations for most of the world's major economies amidst an atmosphere of heightened global uncertainty.

This development marks a significant shift in India's representation at the International Monetary Fund, highlighting the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of international financial governance. The termination of Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian's services underscores the complexities involved in navigating the global economic landscape, especially in times of increasing volatility and challenges.
