When is the last date to link Aadhaar with mobile? There has been a great deal of confusion on this issue. While in an affidavit, the Centre had said that the linking must take place by February, the Department of Telecommunications spoke in a different tone.
DoT Secretary Aruna Sundararajan told reporters in Delhi that the DoT would wait for the order of the SC on Aadhaar linking. At present, there is no plan to disconnect mobile numbers for not linking with the UIDAI number, she said.
For those who are abroad, the DoT is working on alternatives, she further added.
Telecom minister Manoj Sinha said the government's aim is to provide mobile connection and not disconnection. However, we only want to prevent any misuse of the system, he added.
The Supreme Court will be hearing a batch of petitions on November 13. The Centre is expected to make its stand clear on the issue. The SC had asked the Centre for an assurance that no action would be taken in case linking of Aadhaar to mobile and other services is not done. The Centre said that no action will be taken during the pendency of the petition.
For now, it is not mandatory to link Aadhaar with mobile. The SC would take the final call on the matter. Even the telecom companies have said now that they would wait for the decision of the Supreme Court.
