When A Young Ratan Tata Explored Jamshedpur During A College Break

Ratan Tata, the iconic industrialist and chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, has passed away at the age of 86. Following his death, he has become a top trend on the internet, with tributes pouring in from people across the world.

Just last year, Tata had fondly recalled his first visit to Jamshedpur, the city established by Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata in Jharkhand. During a college holiday, he visited the steel city, which would later become central to his career. "I remember the first time I ever visited Jamshedpur when I was on holiday from college. Mr. R. G. Da Costa and Mr. J. D. Chokshi invited me to visit the Telco plant and have a walk around. This trip was much before I started working on the Tata Steel floor, my first interaction with the legacy city of Jamshedpur," Tata shared on Instagram in July 2020, along with a photo of his younger self at the plant.

After completing his studies, Tata returned to India in 1962 and moved to Jamshedpur, then in Bihar, for his first assignment with Tata Steel (then known as Tisco). Over six years, he worked on the shop floor, first in the engineering division and later in the projects division as a technical assistant to the director-in-charge.

Jamshedpur, once known as Sakchi, was named after Jamshedji Tata following the establishment of the Tata Steel plant, cementing its legacy as the heart of the Tata empire.
