What was Reliance Insurance scam case in J&K?

Former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik has been summoned by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with an alleged corruption case by industrialist Anil Ambani's Reliance General Insurance. Last year, the CBI had questioned Satypal Malik in connection with this case.

So, what was the case about?

In April last year, the CBI lodged two FIRs over corruption allegations levelled by Malik in the awarding of contracts for a group medical insurance scheme for government employees and civil work worth Rs 2,200 crore related to the Kiru hydroelectric power project in Jammu and Kashmir, PTI reported..

Malik in his allegation last year had said he was offered a bribe of Rs 150 crore each for clearing two files, one of them related to Ambani and other to a former minister in the previous Mehbooba Mufti-led (PDP-BJP coalition) government.

However, Malik had scrapped the deal by the company when he was the governor of Jammu and Kashmir saying 'it was full of frauds', according to the report.

In an FIR, the probe agency named Reliance General Insurance along with private broker, M/S Trinity Reinsurance Brokers Ltd as accused in the alleged scam in rolling out a medical insurance scheme for the Jammu and Kashmir government employees and their families.

The scheme, covering around 3.5 lakh employees, was rolled out in September 2018 and it was cancelled within a month by Malik.

It is to be noted that Satyapal Malik, in a recent interview with Karan Thapar, had alleged that when he was the J&K governor, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) national executive member Ram Madhav had met and told him about the involvement of kickbacks worth Rs 300 crore in clearing files for two projects.
