What is the UN Secretary-General doing while Ukraine, Russia fight?
The Ukraine-Russia war crisis challenges the cornerstone principles and values of the multilateral system. It has been a year now and if things escalate, it could be dangerous for regional stability and security.
For the last couple of days UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been quite a busy man condemning Russia on one or the other platforms for the Ukraine war. In the latest statement, he has called Russia's invasion of Ukraine 'outrageous' and 'an affront' to the collective conscience of the United Nations Charter. Earlier, he had said that the two warring nations should cease the war and start working on the peaceful resolution.
Guterres places the complete blame of whatever is happening in Ukraine on Russia and calls it a violation of the UN Charter. He is of the view that the Ukraine and Russian crisis challenges the cornerstone principles and values of the multilateral system. Commenting on the never ending war, he said that it has been a year now and if things escalate it could be dangerous for regional stability and security.

Although the UN chief has been trying to bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiation table, he has not seen much success on this front. Ukraine with the support of the US hopes to deepen Russia's diplomatic isolation through a resolution in the UN.
Ukraine has also received support from Guterres as he says that the position of the UN is unequivocal as far as the war is concerned and it is committed to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Ukraine crisis could fuel regional instability
Showing his concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine, the UN Secretary-General said that it could fuel regional instability and fan global tensions and divisions. His statement has drawn a lot of semblance from the fact that several European countries and the US have entered in the war on behalf of Ukraine.
Not only has the US, with its NATO allies, armed Ukraine it has also offered moral support. Just a couple of days ago, US President Joe Biden travelled to Ukraine and showed solidarity to Zelensky's government. He also assured the Ukrainian leadership for more military supplies and all sorts of support against Russia.
Putin's suspension of nuke treaty spooks NATO
In response to what the US is doing for Ukraine in its war against Russia, Vladimir Putin has suspended Russian participation in the last nuclear pact with America. More than a decade ago in 2010, the US and Russia had signed the 'New START treaty'. Putin's action has spooked NATO which has been pushing and cornering Russia for quite some time over the Ukraine.
Moreover, the suspension of the nuclear treaty with the US is also an indication that it could end Europe's post-Cold War arms control architecture.
