What Is In Ratan Tata's Will?
Ratan Tata, celebrated industrialist and philanthropist, has made special arrangements to ensure lifelong care for his beloved German Shepherd, Tito. Though leaving inheritances for pets is a common practice in the West, it remains rare in India, making Tata's gesture a unique expression of his deep affection for his pets, according to a report in The Times of India.
Tito, who has been a cherished companion for five to six years since the passing of Tata's previous dog with the same name, will be cared for by Tata's trusted cook, Rajan Shaw.

This decision highlights Tata's love for animals, revealing a personal side that complements his professional legacy. In his will, Tata, whose assets are valued at over Rs 10,000 crore, has extended provisions not only to Tito but also to family members and close associates.
His brother Jimmy Tata, half-sisters Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, household staff, and long-time butler Subbiah, with whom Tata has shared a 30-year bond, are all thoughtfully included. Known for his generosity, Tata has often treated his staff to designer clothes during his travels, a small reflection of his commitment to those close to him, the report added.
Tata's benevolence extends beyond his immediate circle, with significant assets bequeathed to his foundation. In line with the Tata Group's ethos of giving back, his 0.83% stake in Tata Sons, the holding entity of the $165-billion Tata conglomerate, is slated for transfer to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF).
This move aligns with the group's tradition of supporting charitable trusts, ensuring that Tata's legacy of philanthropy continues. N Chandrasekaran, the chief of Tata Sons, is expected to chair RTEF, further cementing the foundation's ties with the Tata Group.
Ratan Tata's will also details his extensive property and financial assets. Among these are a 2,000-square-foot beach bungalow in Alibaug, a two-storey residence on Juhu Tara Road in Mumbai, and fixed deposits amounting to more than Rs 350 crore.
Additionally, his stakes in various Tata Group companies, including Tata Motors, will be transferred to RTEF, emphasizing his commitment to non-profit causes. RTEF, established in 2022 as a section 8 company, has already made noteworthy investments, such as purchasing shares in Tata Technologies from Tata Motors for Rs 147 crore ahead of its 2023 IPO.
The fate of several of Tata's properties, like the Alibaug bungalow and the Juhu house, remains undetermined. The Juhu property, inherited from his father Naval Tata, has been unused for over two decades, with plans to sell it still under consideration. Similarly, the future of the Halekai house in Colaba, where Tata resided, is in the hands of Ewart Investments, a subsidiary of Tata Sons.
A Life Beyond Wealth
Ratan Tata's interests and achievements span beyond his business empire. His vast collection of 20-30 cars, featuring luxury models, is housed at the Halekai residence and the Taj Wellington Mews service apartments in Colaba. The future of this collection is being deliberated, with possibilities including acquisition by the Tata Group for its Pune museum or auctioning. Also, Tata's numerous awards and recognitions will be donated to the Tata Central Archives in Pune, ensuring his accomplishments and contributions are preserved for posterity.
Despite leading the illustrious Tata Group, worth over $100 billion, Ratan Tata's personal wealth has always been modest in comparison to his industrial peers, often keeping him off rich lists. His will, expected to undergo probate by the Bombay high court, reflects a life dedicated to not just corporate success, but also personal passions, philanthropy, and a deep sense of responsibility towards his employees and society at large.
