What Is Deepfake Technology? Rashmika Mandanna, Tom Hanks, And MrBeast Fall Victim To AI-Generated Scams
Actress Rashmika Mandanna has found herself at the center of a deepfake video controversy that has sparked concern and calls for legal action. The viral video, circulating on social media, shows a woman entering an elevator with her face digitally manipulated to resemble Mandanna's. This incident has raised alarms about the misuse of deepfake technology and the need for stronger regulations.
Bollywood legend and Mandanna's co-star in the movie "Goodbye," Amitabh Bachchan, joined the growing chorus of voices expressing concern about the proliferation of deepfakes. He advocated for legal measures to address this issue and protect individuals from unauthorised manipulation of their identities.

The deepfake video of Mandanna quickly gained traction online, with many users deceived by its convincing appearance. The original video, initially posted on Instagram on October 8, featured a woman named Zara Patel. However, there is no indication that Patel was involved in the creation of the deepfake.
In response to the video, Mandanna shared her feelings on the matter through a tweet, describing the experience as "extremely scary" and underscoring the urgent need to address the perils of identity theft and the misuse of technology within the community.
In a separate but related development, Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor recently achieved a significant legal victory that underscores the importance of protecting celebrity rights in the digital age. The Delhi High Court issued an interim order safeguarding Kapoor's personality rights, including his name, image, voice, and even his iconic catchphrase, "jhakaas," preventing their commercial exploitation. Kapoor emphasized the role of AI technology in these cases, suggesting that in the future, he could simply obtain a court order to have infringing content removed.

Meanwhile, Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks issued a warning to his 9.5 million followers about a deepfake scam involving an AI-generated version of himself promoting a dental plan. Hanks clarified that he had no involvement with this video and urged caution against such scams.
YouTube star MrBeast, also known as Jimmy Donaldson, also encountered a similar situation. He shared an AI-generated video of himself making false claims, which he characterized as a "deepfake scam ad." Donaldson's experience further highlights the prevalence and potential harm of such scams.
What Is a Deepfake Video?
The term "deepfake" is a fusion of "deep learning" and "fake." It refers to a video that has been altered using an algorithm to replace the individual in the original video with someone else, particularly a public figure, in a manner that makes the video appear authentic. Deepfakes harness the power of artificial intelligence, specifically deep learning, to create images of fictitious events and situations that have never occurred. The proliferation of AI tools has led to the increased prevalence of deepfake videos. Some of these AI tools are freely accessible, contributing to the proliferation of fake photos, videos, and audio.
How Can You Spot a Deepfake Video?
- Although deepfake videos can be remarkably convincing, several telltale signs can assist in identifying them:
- Unnatural Eye Movements: Observe for unnatural eye movements, including a lack of blinking or erratic eye shifts.
- Mismatches in Color and Lighting: Pay attention to inconsistencies in color and lighting between the person's face and the background.
- Audio Quality: Compare the audio quality with the lip movements to ensure they align.
- Visual Inconsistencies: Scrutinize for visual inconsistencies, such as peculiar body shape or movements, artificial facial expressions, unnatural positioning of facial features, or awkward posture.
- Reverse Image Search: Conduct a reverse image search of the video or the individual to determine their authenticity.
- Video Metadata: Inspect the video's metadata to identify any alterations or editing.
- Deepfake Detection Tools: Utilize deepfake detection tools, including online platforms or browser extensions, designed to flag suspicious videos.
