What Caused the 25-Vehicle Pile-Up on Mumbai-Pune Expressway?

A devastating accident unfolded on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on July 26, 2025, when a trailer lost control near the Adoshi tunnel, triggering a collision involving 25 vehicles. The accident claimed the life of 58-year-old Anita Sahadev Ekhande from Padoli village in Dharashiv district. She was travelling with her family when tragedy struck.

What Caused the 25-Vehicle Pile-Up on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Brake Failure on a Steep Descent

According to police officials, the trailer suffered brake failure on a steep downhill stretch. Raigad Superintendent of Police Anchal Dalal stated that the vehicle "collided with vehicles in front of it" and dragged several of them for nearly 3.5 km due to the momentum and impact. The heavy vehicle's loss of control led to a domino effect, damaging seven other vehicles extensively.

Driver Arrested, Mechanical Failure Suspected

Khopoli police arrested the trailer driver, 29-year-old Rajeshkumar Ramsumer Patel. Preliminary investigations suggest a mechanical fault - particularly brake failure - as the cause of the crash. There were no signs of intoxication or foul play, according to officials.

Eighteen people sustained injuries in the pile-up, most of them passengers of a 17-seater Traveller vehicle severely damaged in the crash. Rescue efforts were carried out swiftly with support from volunteers of the HELP Foundation. Bhakti Sathelkar, one of the first responders, noted that the injured were mostly women and included a nine-year-old child.

Seventeen of the injured were admitted to MGM Hospital in Kamothe, and one person was treated at a private hospital. Dr Kuldeep Raj Salgotra reported that one patient is in critical condition with head trauma and is on ventilator support. Others suffered fractures to the pelvis, spine, collarbone, and limbs.

This incident underscores the urgent need for rigorous vehicle maintenance, especially for heavy-duty trailers, and stricter monitoring on hilly expressway routes. Regular brake system checks and enforcement of load limits are critical to prevent such tragedies in the future.
