West Bengal Train Accident: 19 Trains Cancelled After Kanchenjunga Express Accident - Check List

The Kanchanjungha Express traveling from Agartala to Sealdah on 16 June was struck from behind by a goods train carrying containers between Rangapani and Chatterhat stations under the jurisdiction of Katihar division of N.F. Railway today.

The location is approximately 10 km from New Jalpaiguri station. The collision occurred at around 08:55 this morning.

Kanchenjunga Express Accident

Upon receiving the information, an Accident Relief Medical team along with personnel and equipment was immediately dispatched to the location. Senior officials from New Jalpaiguri and Katihar also arrived at the site. General Manager of N.F. Railway, Shri Chetan Shrivastava, along with other senior officials, departed from Maligaon by train to reach the site, while Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw has already departed from Delhi for the site.

As a result of the incident, 4 coaches at the rear of the Kanchanjungha Express and 5 wagons of the container train were derailed, obstructing train movements on both Up and Down lines. There have been casualties and injuries due to the accident. Approximately 8 people have died and nearly 25 others have been injured. Adequate medical assistance is being provided to all injured persons.

The unaffected part of the Kanchanjungha Express has already departed from the site to resume its journey. All passengers aboard the Kanchanjungha Express were provided with food packets and water bottles. Helpline numbers were issued and circulated at all major stations along the train route.
