West Bengal Health Department Acts on RG Kar Hospital Crisis
The West Bengal government has removed three senior officials from RG Kar hospital following demands by junior doctors. These doctors have been protesting against the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at the state-run facility. The decision aims to restore normalcy and regularise healthcare services.

State Health Secretary NS Nigam confirmed that Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar hospital, was also removed from his position at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. The three senior officials were transferred to various other state-run health facilities.
Changes in Key Positions
An order issued on Wednesday evening detailed the changes. Prof Dr Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, the Medical Superintendent and Vice Principal of RG Kar hospital, was replaced by Saptarshi Chatterjee. Manas Kumar Bandyopadhyay was appointed as the new principal of RGKMCH, replacing Suhrita Paul, who was moved to Barasat Government Medical College and Hospital.
The head of RGKMCH's chest medicine department, Arunabha Datta Chaudhuri, was transferred to Malda Medical College and Hospital. These changes were made in response to the junior doctors' demands.
Protests and Demands
Junior doctors at RGKMCH have been on ceasework since August 9 evening. They are protesting against the alleged rape and murder of a female postgraduate trainee and demanding justice for her. The protests have significantly impacted healthcare services at the hospital.
Nigam stated, "As per demands of the junior doctors, we are bringing in some changes for which we have no objection. We want normalcy to be back and healthcare services to be regularised. Security arrangements have also been enhanced."
The government hopes these administrative changes will address the concerns of the protesting doctors and help restore normal operations at the hospital. Enhanced security measures have also been implemented to ensure safety within the facility.
The situation remains tense as junior doctors continue their protest, seeking justice for their colleague. The government's swift action in transferring senior officials is seen as a step towards resolving the crisis and resuming regular healthcare services at RG Kar hospital.
