West Bengal Marks Ram Navami with Peaceful Celebrations and Political Engagement
Ram Navami, a significant Hindu festival, was observed across West Bengal on Wednesday, with extensive security measures in place. The day was marked by vibrant processions and festivities, although a concerning incident occurred in Murshidabad where a blast injured one woman near a procession in the Shaktipur area. The cause of the explosion remains unclear, with police investigations ongoing. Despite this, the celebrations largely concluded without further disturbances.

In another part of Murshidabad, the BJP reported that their Ram Navami procession in the Rejinagar area was targeted with stones. The party has called on the Election Commission to take decisive action against the responsible police officers for failing to maintain order. On the other hand, the TMC has accused the BJP of inciting violence to create tension ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) played a significant role in the day's events, organizing over 5,000 programs across the state to promote Hindu unity and devotion to Lord Ram. This year's Ram Navami not only reflected religious fervor but also became a platform for political outreach as leaders from both TMC and BJP participated actively in the celebrations, eyeing the Lok Sabha polls.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended her wishes to the populace for Ram Navami through a post on X, emphasizing peace, prosperity, and development. Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari and several other political figures from both TMC and BJP were seen leading processions in various parts of the state.
Despite administrative bans on displaying weapons during processions in certain areas like Howrah and Durgapur, participants were seen with traditional arms, which BJP representatives claimed were part of ritual practices. TMC leaders also took part in peaceful rallies, advocating for non-violent celebration.
Controversy arose at Jadavpur University as permission for Ram Navami celebrations by the RSS-affiliated ABVP was revoked following protests by Left-backed student organizations. This incident highlights the ongoing tension between different political factions in West Bengal.
CPIM leader Tanmay Bhattacharya voiced concerns over what he termed "competitive communalism" between BJP and TMC, indicating a shift from West Bengal's traditional celebration of Ram Navami. The festival's scale has notably increased since 2016, paralleling BJP's growing influence in the state. This expansion of festivities has been accompanied by instances of communal violence in recent years, underscoring the complex interplay between religion and politics in West Bengal.
