West Bengal Introduces 'Rattierer Saathi' for Women's Night Shift Safety

The West Bengal Health Department has introduced measures to improve the safety of women working night shifts in both government and private sectors. The initiative, named Rattierer Saathi — Helpers of the Night, aims to provide a safer work environment for women. These guidelines will be implemented in medical colleges, hospitals, and hostels lacking similar provisions.

Boosting Womens Night Shift Safety

Designated Restrooms and Volunteers

Separate restrooms with toilets for women will be established under the new guidelines. Additionally, female volunteers will be on duty during nighttime shifts. Safe zones equipped with CCTV coverage will also be created for women. A special mobile app with alarm features connected to local police stations will be mandatory for all working women.

Emergency Measures and Security Checks

In emergencies, helpline numbers 100 and 112 should be used extensively. Regular security checks and breathalyzer tests will be conducted to ensure a safe working environment. Organisations are encouraged to form Vishakha Committees to address sexual harassment issues if they do not already exist.

Night police patrols will be conducted in medical colleges, hospitals, women's hostels, and other relevant locations. Adequate drinking water facilities will be provided on all hospital floors. Identity cards must be displayed by faculty, staff, and security guards in medical institutions.

Work Schedules and Security Officers

Work schedules should be arranged so that women work in pairs or teams during night shifts to ensure mutual awareness of each other’s movements. Private institutions are also encouraged to adopt the Rattierer Saathi programme. Security officers will be posted by police in all medical colleges, hospitals, and district hospitals for overall security supervision.

The working hours for women should not exceed 12 hours at a time. Wherever possible, night duty should be avoided for women to the extent possible.

These comprehensive measures aim to create a safer working environment for women in various sectors across West Bengal.
