West Bengal Junior Doctors Request President, PM's Help Over Hospital Crisis

Junior doctors in West Bengal have reached out to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking their help in resolving the RG Kar hospital crisis. The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front sent a four-page letter, also addressed to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Union Health Minister J P Nadda.

Doctors Seek Leaders Aid in Crisis

The letter highlights the tragic incident on August 9, where a post-graduate trainee was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Since then, junior doctors have been on strike. "We humbly place the issues before your esteemed excellency, as the head of state, so that our unfortunate colleague who has been the victim of the most despicable crime shall receive justice, and so that we, the healthcare professionals under the West Bengal Health department, may be able to discharge our duties to the public without fear and apprehension. Your intervention in these trying times will act as a beacon of light to us all, showing us the way ahead out of the darkness that surrounds us," they wrote.

Concerns Over Mishandling

Aniket Mahato, one of the protesting doctors, mentioned that the letter was drafted earlier this month and sent on Thursday night. The letter criticises how the institute's head, state police, and certain government officials allegedly mishandled forensic and legal proceedings. It claims there was little regard for preserving the crime scene's sanctity, which was compromised by several individuals within the medical fraternity.

The letter further states that due to these circumstances, there is a "deep mistrust and fear" towards authorities. The doctors urge for these harmful elements within the health system to be removed to ensure a safe workplace. "In this turbid atmosphere of fear, distrust and hopelessness," it continues, "the junior doctors in West Bengal have been 'forced' to avoid working within the hospital premises and instead have taken alternative modes to discharge the duty of providing health care services to citizens."

Seeking Justice and Safety

The junior doctors emphasised their need for justice for their colleague and a safer work environment. They believe that intervention from higher authorities is crucial in these challenging times. The letter appeals for action to restore their confidence in the system and allow them to perform their duties without fear.

They expressed hope that addressing these issues would help them return to their roles within hospital premises safely. The junior doctors' plea underscores their desperation for a resolution that ensures both justice for their colleague and safety for themselves.

The ongoing strike by junior doctors has significantly impacted healthcare services at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Their demand for justice and safety remains at the forefront of their protest.

The conclusion of this matter is awaited as authorities deliberate on how best to address the concerns raised by the junior doctors. Their appeal highlights a critical need for systemic changes within West Bengal's healthcare sector.
