West Bengal Maintains COVID-19 Surveillance Amidst Countrywide Surge

The West Bengal Health Department is committed to ongoing surveillance of influenza-like illnesses and severe acute respiratory infections, in line with central guidelines, amidst the rising COVID-19 cases in India.

In response to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases across India, the West Bengal Health Department has reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) cases in accordance with central guidelines. The department's representatives participated in a high-level review meeting with states, chaired by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, to discuss the evolving situation and strengthen preparedness measures.

West Bengals Proactive Approach to COVID-19 Resurgence

Adherence to Guidelines and Readiness

Emphasizing the ongoing threat of COVID-19, Mandaviya urged states to closely monitor emerging cases, symptoms, and case severity to ensure an appropriate public health response. He stressed the importance of maintaining vigilance, enhancing surveillance, and ensuring adequate stockpiles of essential medical supplies, including medicines, oxygen cylinders and concentrators, ventilators, and vaccines.

Genome Sequencing of New Variant

Amid concerns over the emergence of new variants, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is actively conducting genome sequencing of the recently identified JN.1 variant of SARS-CoV-2. According to NITI Aayog member (health) Dr. V K Paul, twenty-one cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected in India thus far. The JN.1 BA.2.86.1.1 variant, which emerged in late 2023, is a descendant of the BA.2.86 lineage of SARS-CoV-2.

As India grapples with the resurgence of COVID-19 cases, states like West Bengal are taking proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic. By adhering to central guidelines, maintaining surveillance, and ensuring preparedness, the state aims to safeguard public health and effectively manage any potential challenges posed by the evolving situation.
