West Bengal Governor Fights Back Against 'Engineered Narratives'
In a recent development that has stirred the political landscape of West Bengal, Governor C V Ananda Bose has found himself at the center of serious allegations. Reports emerged on Thursday that a woman employed at Raj Bhavan accused the Governor of molestation. This accusation has ignited a firestorm of reactions across political lines, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders amplifying the charges through social media platforms.

Responding to these allegations, Governor Bose issued a defiant statement, asserting his innocence and vowing not to be intimidated by what he described as "engineered narratives." "Truth shall triumph. I refuse to be cowed down by engineered narratives. If anybody wants some election benefits by maligning me, God bless them. But they cannot stop my fight against corruption and violence in Bengal," he stated. This response came amidst expressions of support from Raj Bhavan staff, who rallied around the Governor against what was termed derogatory narratives circulated by two disgruntled employees.
The controversy took a more formal turn when senior police officials confirmed receiving a complaint from the woman involved. Deputy Commissioner of Central Division, Indira Mukherjee, disclosed that an investigation was underway, with consultations ongoing with constitutional law experts. The allegation detailed an incident of molestation within the confines of Raj Bhavan.
TMC leaders took to social media to express their outrage over the incident, with Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose describing the accusation as "appalling and horrifying." The timing of the allegation, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kolkata, where he was expected to stay at Raj Bhavan, added another layer of complexity to the situation.
West Bengal Women and Child Development Minister Shashi Panja also weighed in, condemning the Governor's actions as shameful and demanding a reaction from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his rallies in Bengal.
Amidst these developments, sources from Governor House suggested that the complaint might have been motivated by grievances related to workplace dynamics. According to these sources, the woman, along with an alleged boyfriend who is also employed at Raj Bhavan, was obstructing complaints from reaching the Election Commission of India. Following a reprimand for this behavior, she allegedly made the molestation claim.
The relationship between Governor Bose and the TMC government has been fraught with tension since his appointment in November 2022. This incident adds another chapter to their contentious interactions. In a separate move reflecting this strained relationship, Governor Bose banned West Bengal Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya from entering Raj Bhavan premises in Kolkata, Darjeeling, and Barrackpore due to defamation and anti-constitutional media statements.
Furthermore, Bose has directed his office to exclude him from any functions attended by Minister Bhattacharya and sought legal advice from the attorney general for India on further steps against her. He also prohibited police entry into Raj Bhavan premises for what he termed unauthorized investigations aimed at appeasing political leaders during elections.
The BJP has commented on the situation, suggesting that it could either be a conspiracy by the TMC or contain elements of truth. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari highlighted the TMC's current political challenges related to the SSC scam as a backdrop to this controversy.
This unfolding drama encapsulates not only a personal accusation against a high-ranking official but also reflects deeper political rivalries and tensions within West Bengal's governance landscape.
