West Bengal's Governor Rebukes CM Over Nandigram Violence, Seeks Report

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has issued a stern directive to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the tragic killing of an elderly woman in Nandigram, Purba Medinipur district. The governor's communication, sent to the state secretariat on Thursday evening, demands immediate action from the Chief Minister and an action-taken report in response to the incident. Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Bose emphasized the need for adherence to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and warned against any constitutional violations.

The incident that triggered this response involved the death of a woman BJP worker from the Scheduled Caste community in Nandigram on Wednesday night. This event led to widespread protests by BJP activists in the area on Thursday. The protests saw demonstrators burning tyres, blocking roads, and shutting down shops in Nandigram, accusing TMC-backed criminals of being behind the murder of Rathibala Arhi, a resident of Sonachura village.

In his communication, Governor Bose expressed his disapproval of what he termed "state government-sponsored violence" in Nandigram and stressed that any breach of constitutional duties would be met with serious consequences. He reminded Banerjee of her obligations under Article 167 of the Constitution of India to take effective measures within the MCC's parameters.

The violence in Nandigram has not only resulted in Rathibala Arhi's death but also left her son Sanjay and seven others injured after an attack by unidentified assailants on Wednesday night. In response to escalating tensions, police, central forces, and RAF personnel were deployed, resorting to a lathicharge to disperse the mob. Authorities have detained one individual in connection with the alleged murder.

Nandigram, falling under the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat and known as a stronghold of Bengal's leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari, is slated for elections on May 25. The incident has heightened tensions in an already volatile political landscape, with both local law enforcement and political leaders under pressure to restore peace and order.

The governor's directive underscores the urgency of addressing political violence and ensuring safety and fairness in the electoral process.
