West Bengal government issues notices to 125 schools over religious intolerance

The West Bengal government on Thursday issued show cause notices to 125 schools accusing them of promoting 'religious intolerance'. The state's Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said that out of the 125 schools, 96 had not obtained NOC objection certificates from the government. The minister added that the notice was only the first step of investigation following a complaint against the schools for allegedly promoting religious intolerance.

"This is a genuine complaint and the school education department is inquiring into the charges against those schools. I have to mention that 5 of these schools have permissions from previous government but 96 do not have an NOC. They are running without required permission," he said after confirming that the notices have been sent.

The government, however, is being accused of targeting Hindu schools for appeasement politics. "I was informed that the RSS website claims that 300 schools are run by their trust in west Bengal. If that is the case, then we will identify those schools. If they are found to be in line with the claim of the RSS then everything will be stopped and nobody will be allowed to teach on religious doctrine," Chatterjee told the media.
