Governor Bose Demands White Paper on West Bengal's Financial Woes

Governor CV Ananda Bose has urged the Mamata Banerjee administration to present a white paper on West Bengal's financial status, citing a potential financial breakdown. This call came after his meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi.

Call for Transparency in West Bengal

The Governor highlighted that West Bengal's fiscal health is fraught with multiple risks and public finance management issues. "It is very disturbing, shocking, and shattering to see that West Bengal is facing a financial breakdown. Its public finance is in the doldrums," he stated in a release from the Raj Bhavan.

Governor's Call for Transparency

Invoking his authority under Article 167 of the Constitution, Bose requested Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to provide a detailed report on the state's finances. He also asked for a White Paper to be issued for public awareness. The statement stressed the need for transparency given the severe economic scenario.

During his discussion with Sitharaman, Bose stressed the importance of launching income-generating programmes for those reliant on the fisheries sector. Raj Bhavan officials mentioned that the Governor presented a comprehensive action plan aimed at developing this sector.

The Governor's statement underscored serious lapses by the state government in managing public finances. He expressed deep concern over the current fiscal situation, describing it as alarming and requiring immediate attention.

Focus on Fisheries Sector

Bose's meeting with Sitharaman also focused on economic development initiatives for the fisheries sector. He handed over a detailed action plan to the minister, aiming to boost income for those dependent on this industry.

The Governor's appeal for a White Paper aims to ensure that both the council of ministers and the public are fully informed about the state's financial health. This move seeks to address and rectify the fiscal challenges faced by West Bengal.

In light of these developments, it remains crucial for the state government to take prompt action to stabilise its financial situation. The Governor's call for transparency and accountability highlights the urgent need for effective public finance management in West Bengal.
