West Bengal Bypoll: TMC’s Welfare Push Pays Off in Kaliganj as Alifa Ahamed Scores Big
Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Alifa Ahamed has won the Kaliganj Assembly by-election in West Bengal's Nadia district, securing a resounding victory with over 1,02,759 votes. She contested the seat following the death of her father, former MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed, whose passing in February necessitated the bypoll.
The BJP's Ashish Ghosh came in second with 32,154 votes, while Kabil Uddin Shaikh, backed by the Congress-Left alliance, finished third with 23,271 votes.

Smooth Polling, High Turnout
Polling took place last Thursday, recording a voter turnout of 69.85% by 5 PM. The election was conducted peacefully, with only minor, isolated incidents reported.
Minority Support and Welfare Schemes Key to Victory
The Kaliganj constituency, which has a significant minority population, showed strong support for TMC. Alifa's win was seen as a direct reflection of TMC's sustained popularity among Muslim voters, along with the widespread appeal of Mamata Banerjee's flagship scheme, Lakshmir Bhandar, which provides financial support to over 2.2 crore women in the state.
BJP's Challenge and Future Strategy
The BJP, while performing well in Hindu-majority pockets, fell significantly short in this minority-dominated seat. The result indicates the party's urgent need to consolidate Hindu votes statewide if it hopes to pose a serious challenge to the TMC in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Mamata Banerjee's Strategic Minority Outreach
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been actively working to retain minority support, aware that any shift toward the Congress-Left front could alter the political balance. Kaliganj appears to validate her approach, reinforcing TMC's grip on such key constituencies.
