Weather Update: Orange Alert In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh As Heavy Rain Predicted By IMD Over Next 48 Hours

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted that Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are set to experience heavy rainfall due to a significant low-pressure area hovering over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. This weather phenomenon has prompted the issuance of an orange alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe, indicating expectations of heavy rain. A yellow alert, signaling rain, is in place for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka over the next two days. This weather forecast signifies the potential for severe weather conditions in these regions, with residents advised to prepare for the upcoming heavy rains.

The IMD's prediction points towards heavy rainfall across several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Thanjavur, Sivagangai, Pudukkottai, and Tiruchirappalli, particularly on December 11 and 12. Additionally, isolated areas in Tamil Nadu such as Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villuppuram, and Chennai are also likely to experience heavy downpours. This weather pattern extends to Puducherry and Karaikal, highlighting a wide impact across the region.

Fishermen in Tamil Nadu have received warnings against venturing into the sea from December 11 to 13 due to the expected adverse weather conditions. This cautionary measure underscores the potential risks associated with the heavy rainfall and turbulent sea conditions forecasted for the region. The IMD's advisory emphasizes the importance of safety and preparedness during this period of inclement weather.

The regional meteorological center in Chennai has provided a comprehensive outlook for the coming days, predicting light to moderate rain across many areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The forecast includes thunderstorms and lightning in one or two places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in isolated locations within Tamil Nadu and Karaikal. The affected districts include Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai, reflecting a broad area of impact.

Furthermore, the weather forecast for December 12 anticipates continued light to moderate rain throughout Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely in select areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted in isolated parts of Thanjavur, Sivagangai, Pudukkottai, and Tiruchirappalli districts in Tamil Nadu. The extended forecast indicates heavy rain is also expected in other Tamil Nadu districts, including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and several more, along with Puducherry and Karaikal.

The IMD has extended its heavy rainfall warning to various parts of southern India, with Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal slated for isolated heavy rainfall until December 13 and again on December 16. Very heavy rainfall is particularly expected on December 11 and 12. The forecast also highlights heavy rainfall in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Kerala, Mahe, South Interior Karnataka, and Coastal Karnataka on specific dates, indicating a widespread impact across the southern region of the country.

Additionally, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning is forecasted over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until December 14. Similar conditions are expected in Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka on designated dates. The forecast extends to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, where heavy rainfall at isolated places is anticipated on December 14, demonstrating the extensive reach of this weather event across the southern part of India.
