'We Will Not Retreat From Responsibility': Chandrasekaran On Air India Tragedy
Calling it "one of the darkest days in the Tata Group's history," Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow over the crash of Air India Flight AI 171 near Ahmedabad. In a message to employees on Friday, he described the tragedy as incomprehensible and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and injured, promising full transparency once investigations conclude.
"Words are no consolation right now, but my thoughts are with the families and loved ones... We are here for them," he said, adding that the Group is in mourning and committed to supporting those affected.

Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was en route from Ahmedabad to London when it crashed shortly after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. Of the 242 people on board, including 12 crew members, 241 were killed.
Chandrasekaran confirmed that investigative teams from India, the UK, and the US have reached Ahmedabad to begin a comprehensive probe. He stated that the Tata Group is fully cooperating with authorities and will communicate verified findings transparently.

While addressing widespread speculation, he urged patience, noting that trained investigators alone can determine why a routine flight ended in disaster. "Once we have verified facts, we will be transparent in our communication about how this tragedy took place," he reiterated.
He also reflected on the Tata Group's acquisition of Air India on January 27, 2022, nearly 69 years after its nationalisation, noting that passenger safety was always the top priority. "There was no compromising on it," he wrote.
Reaffirming the Group's values of trust and care, Chandrasekaran said the focus now is on helping the victims' families and fulfilling the Group's responsibility to do what is right. "We will carry this loss. We will not forget," he concluded.
