Wayanad Landslides: Congress Pledges To Construct Over 100 Houses, Says Rahul Gandhi
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, announced on Friday that the Congress party will construct over 100 houses in Wayanad, Kerala, in response to the recent tragedy caused by three major landslides. The disaster has claimed the lives of over 300 and ravaged numerous houses.
Gandhi, who is currently visiting relief camps in Wayanad, highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, "I have been here since yesterday. As I said earlier, this is a terrible tragedy. We went to the site and camps yesterday, and assessed the situation there. Today, we had a meeting with the administration and the panchayat. They briefed us on the number of casualties they expect, the number of houses that have been damaged and their strategy."

He expressed his commitment to supporting the affected communities, saying, "We have said that we are here to help in any way possible. Congress family would like to commit to build 100 plus houses here. I think, Kerala has not seen this type of a tragedy in one area, and I am going to raise it in Delhi and also with the CM here that this is a different level of tragedy and should be treated differently."
Gandhi also shared his emotional response to the devastation, comparing it to the feelings he experienced when his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was assassinated in 1991.
He has been visiting various camps along with Congress General Secretary and sister Priyanka Gandhi, who has been announced as the Lok Sabha candidate from Wayanad.
The landslides have resulted in a major destruction, with around 350 buildings damaged.
Rescue operations, involving 1,600 workers from the Army, Navy, and NDRF, have faced numerous challenges, including treacherous terrain and a shortage of heavy equipment.
