Water Tank Collapse in Mathura Claims Lives of Two Women, Injures Eleven

Two women lost their lives, and 11 others sustained injuries when an overhead water tank collapsed in a densely populated area of Mathura district on Sunday, officials reported. The incident occurred around 6 pm in Krishna Vihar Colony, developed by the Uttar Pradesh Awas Vikas Parishad.

Rescue Efforts and Medical Response

District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar Singh stated that the injured, including five women, were taken to the district hospital for treatment. Nawab, aged 35, was transferred to SN Medical College and Hospital in Agra due to his serious condition. Dr Bhudev Prasad, in charge of the Rapid Response Team of the Health Department, confirmed that two women died en route to the hospital.

The deceased were identified as Sundari, 65, and Sarita, 27. The injured individuals include Saraswati, 45; Baby, 52; Kamlesh, 65; Nikunja, 22; Mili, 18; Prince, 6; Gaurishankar, 84; Mahavir, 50; Vipindra, 34; and Ramesh Chand, 66. Dr Prasad mentioned that all injured persons are currently stable.

Ongoing Rescue Operations

Additional District Magistrate Finance and Revenue Yogendra Pandey confirmed that two people died following the collapse of the 2.5 lakh litre tank. He noted that debris removal is ongoing and several individuals might still be trapped underneath. Teams from the fire service, police department, revenue department, municipal corporation, and health department are actively involved in rescue operations. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also been called in to assist.

Construction Details and Investigation

The water tank's construction was completed in 2021 by the Jal Nigam at a cost of Rs 6 crore under the Gangajal Drinking Water Project. District Magistrate Singh mentioned that an investigation would be conducted into why the tank collapsed after just three years.

The tragic event has left the community in shock as rescue teams continue their efforts to find any remaining survivors under the rubble.
