Madhya Pradesh Minister Addresses Waste Disposal Concerns Linked to Bhopal Gas Tragedy

The disposal of 337 tonnes of waste from the Bhopal gas tragedy has sparked opposition in Dhar near Indore. Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya chaired a meeting on Thursday to address these concerns. As the guardian minister of Dhar, Vijayvargiya met with public representatives, influential figures, and experts to discuss the issue. "We heard the views of everyone in the meeting. We have assured them we will take full care of public interest," he stated.

MP Minister Discusses Bhopal Waste Disposal

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has promised that the disposal process will not harm the environment or people. The waste, linked to the 1984 Bhopal disaster, was transported from the defunct Union Carbide factory to a unit in Dhar district. This transfer occurred around 9 pm on Wednesday using 12 sealed container trucks via a green corridor from Bhopal to Pithampur industrial area, which is 250 km away.

Environmental Concerns and Legal Actions

The vehicles carrying the waste reached their destination at Pithampur around 4:30 am on Thursday. However, local residents have been protesting and plan a bandh in Pithampur on Friday. A group of doctors has also filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Indore bench of the High Court, seeking a halt to the disposal due to health concerns.

The Bhopal gas tragedy is considered the world's worst industrial disaster. On December 2-3, 1984, highly toxic methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide factory in Bhopal. This incident resulted in 5,479 deaths and left thousands with severe long-term health issues.

Government Response and Court Orders

The Madhya Pradesh High Court had previously reprimanded authorities for failing to clear the Union Carbide site despite Supreme Court directives. On December 3, the High Court set a four-week deadline for shifting the waste. The government is now working to comply with this order while addressing public concerns.

Minister Vijayvargiya assured that public interests would be safeguarded during this process. The government aims to balance environmental safety with legal obligations as it proceeds with waste disposal efforts.

Efforts are being made to ensure that no harm comes to people or nature during this operation. Authorities are taking steps to address both legal mandates and community apprehensions regarding health risks associated with toxic waste disposal.
