Vyapam scam: CBI takes over, 40 members to reach MP today

Bhopal, July 13: The CBI constituted a special team of 40 officers, under the joint director level officers, to probe the Vyapam scam. The team is likely to reach Bhopal today. There, however, is no information regarding the team composition and the agency also chose not to comment on reports about a Bihar-cadre officer heading the CBI team.

RK Gaur, the CBI Press Information officer said,"In compliance to the orders of the Honourable Supreme Court of India, CBI has constituted a team to take over the investigation of all Vyapam related cases. The CBI team will reach Bhopal on Monday and the begin the process of taking over the investigation."

A bench headed by chief justice HL Dattu has handed over the case to the CBI and has sought a report before it by July 24.

The apex court, however, recorded the statement of Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi, who on behalf of the MP government said that the government did not have any problem in transferring the case and those related to it to the CBI.

The bench said in response,"We appreciate the stand of the AG. In view of the above we transfer investigation of all criminal cases relating to Vyapam scam and death of people allegedly related to it, to CBI."

This came in the wake of a series of deaths related or even faintly related to the case in the past few months. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was under constant pressure to hand over the case to the CBI for a free and fair trial amid speculation that witnesses and evidences are being tampered with.
