The Gautam Buddh Nagar constituency witnessed a voter turnout of 53.30 per cent in the recent Lok Sabha election, as per the official figures released. This significant electoral event saw 15 candidates vying for the seat, with a total electorate of 26,75,148 eligible voters spread across five assembly segments including Noida, Dadri, Jewar, Khurja, and Sikandrabad. Notably, Khurja and Sikandrabad are geographically located in Bulandshahr district but fall under this parliamentary constituency.

Lower Voter Turnout in Gautam Buddh Nagar

Comparative data from the Election Commission reveals a decrease in voter turnout from previous years, with 60.47 per cent in 2019, 60.38 per cent in 2014, and 48 per cent in 2009. This trend indicates a consistent lag behind the national average voter turnout rates of 67.40 per cent in 2019, 66 per cent in 2014, and 58 per cent in 2009.

The polling process was facilitated across 1,852 stations with around 20,000 security and government personnel deployed to ensure a smooth election day. Despite efforts to boost participation through awareness programs and the introduction of polling booths within large housing societies for the first time, the turnout remained modest.

Early morning voting saw a predominant participation from senior citizens in Noida. District Magistrate and District Election Officer Manish Kumar Verma was among the early voters, casting his vote at Cambridge School in Sector 27 alongside his wife. Voters like Ashok Verma, aged 66, shared positive experiences about the efficiency of the voting process.

Many residents took this opportunity to educate the younger generation about the importance of voting. Manoj and his wife Sujata brought their eight-year-old son Sharav to witness the process firsthand. In Sector 15A, arrangements were made by the Residents Welfare Association (RWA) to facilitate voter transport to polling booths using electric vehicles.

Riya Sarin, marking her vote just before closing time, emphasized the civic duty of voting as essential for those who wish to voice opinions on governance. The decision by the Election Commission to establish polling booths within condominiums was largely appreciated for its convenience, though some residents faced challenges with electoral rolls.

Senior citizen H L Kaul expressed dissatisfaction due to difficulties in receiving his voter ID card after changing addresses. Despite these individual hiccups, efforts by apartment owners' associations and local administration were praised for enhancing voter experience within residential complexes.

Rajiva Singh, president of the Noida Federation of Apartment Owners Association (NOFAA), noted the positive response from residents voting within their society compounds for the first time but expressed disappointment over the turnout not meeting expectations.

In rural areas like Khurja and Sikandrabad, caste dynamics were reported to influence voter sentiment. The mahapanchayat's influence was noted in Hindoli village while Subra village showed mixed reactions towards caste-based politics.

The constituency has seen BJP's Mahesh Sharma securing wins in both 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He faced competition from SP's Mahendra Nagar and BSP's Rajendra Solanki among others this election cycle. The results are eagerly awaited and will be declared on June 4.
