Vizag Steel Plant Workers Request Gangavaram Port to Resume Coal Shipments

In a significant development at Visakhapatnam, approximately 1,000 employees from the Vizag Steel Plant, officially known as Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), took a proactive step on Wednesday by marching to the nearby Adani Gangavaram Port Ltd. Their mission was clear: to appeal to the port's agitating workers to permit the shipment of essential raw materials critical for the steel plant's operations.

Plea for Coal Shipment Resumption

The crux of the issue lies in the shortage of coking coal, a vital component for steel production, which has been held up at the port due to ongoing worker protests. This deadlock has persisted for nearly a month, severely impacting the plant's functionality and financial stability. In response, senior officials and trade union leaders from RINL have extended a humble request to their counterparts at Gangavaram port, urging them to facilitate the immediate transfer of coal to ensure continuity in operations.

Atul Bhatt, the Chairman and Managing Director of RINL, has taken the matter up with higher authorities by penning a letter to the Visakhapatnam Collector. Bhatt's correspondence highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that despite concerted efforts and existing court orders mandating the transportation of coal to RINL via conveyor belts or alternative means, implementation has been lacking. The delay poses a significant threat not only to RINL's operational capabilities but also to its equipment and overall financial health.

Bhatt's appeal to the district administration and police for intervention underscores the critical need for security measures that would enable peaceful transportation of raw materials using RINL's resources. He emphasized that both manpower and machinery are on standby, ready to proceed once clearance is given.

This standoff at Gangavaram Port underscores a broader challenge faced by industries reliant on seamless supply chain operations. The situation at RINL serves as a stark reminder of how industrial disputes can escalate into major operational crises if not addressed promptly. As stakeholders on both sides seek a resolution, the focus remains on finding a balanced approach that safeguards workers' rights while ensuring essential industrial activities can continue without disruption.
