Viral Video of Women Dancing on Kanwar Yatra Truck Sparks Outrage
A viral video has surfaced on social media showing two women dancing on a decorated truck during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, sparking widespread criticism and reigniting the debate over the changing character of religious pilgrimages in India. The video, whose location remains unverified, shows a group of Kanwariyas-devotees clad in saffron-riding atop a vehicle crossing a flyover, possibly over a river.
The most striking and controversial element of the clip is the woman dancing to loud DJ music in front of a cheering crowd of male Kanwariyas. The float appears to be heavily decorated with lights and speakers, resembling a mobile stage more than a traditional religious procession. Overlaid text in Hindi reads "ये कैसे भक्त हैं 😡😡" ("What kind of devotees are these?"), expressing anger at what many see as a blatant disregard for the sanctity of the pilgrimage.

The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage undertaken by millions of Shiva devotees (Kanwariyas), who travel-mostly on foot-to collect holy water from the Ganges River and offer it at Shiva temples in their home towns. Traditionally associated with penance, simplicity, and devotion, the yatra has seen a growing trend of DJ music, dance performances, and elaborate vehicles in recent years.
The viral clip has drawn sharp criticism on social media, with users calling the act disrespectful and inappropriate. Critics argue that such behavior undermines the spiritual purpose of the pilgrimage, turning it into a spectacle. Others suggest that stricter regulation and cultural guidance may be necessary to preserve the sanctity of religious traditions.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the video, but public pressure is mounting for action against what is being called "misuse" of a sacred tradition.
