A single penguin striding away from its colony has really stirred up the internet. The video is from Werner Herzog's 2007 documentary titled 'Encounters at the End of the World' and features a penguin who doesn't want to be with its colony as they go to the sea. Instead, it goes inland, steadily walking towards the mountains, a journey Herzog describes as a death sentence.

The film was released almost twenty years ago, but the footage came back online in 2026 and went viral in no time, getting some names like the nihilist penguin or the rebel.

About an hour and thirty minutes into the film, you can see the penguin standing still for a moment while the others go to the water. It doesn't want to follow and embarks on its solo journey, leaving safety and the colony tradition behind. Herzog says the walk is a 70 to 80-kilometre one and may end in death; however, the penguin doesn't stop. What the clip is really about

In the said scene, a flock of penguins is shown walking to the ocean. At some point, one of the penguins halts, changes direction, and leaves both the ocean and the colony behind. It chooses a path leading to a mountain range, which the narration qualifies as a "certain death" place.
