Vinesh Phogat Responds To Sakshi Malik's 'Greed' Claims Amid Wrestling Controversy
A fierce debate has erupted within the wrestling community and the political landscape of Haryana following revelations from Olympian Sakshi Malik in her newly released autobiography, Witness.
Malik's claims regarding fellow wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have stirred significant controversy, as she accuses them of acting out of "greed" after they accepted exemptions from trials for the 2023 Asian Games, as reported by Times Of India.

According to Malik, these actions have undermined the integrity of the protest movement aimed at addressing serious sexual harassment allegations against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and ex-BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Sakshi Malik's Allegations
In her autobiography, Malik asserts that the wrestlers' decision to skip trials not only tarnished the wrestlers' movement but also reflected poorly on the collective effort to fight against injustice in the sport. She claimed that the protest had garnered support from notable figures, including BJP leader Babita Phogat, known for her role in promoting women's wrestling and that the movement was facilitated by Haryana BJP leader Teerth Rana, who helped secure permission for the protest at Jantar Mantar. Malik emphasized that the Congress Party had no role in these protests, positioning her narrative against the backdrop of ongoing political rivalries, as reported by Times Of India.
Vinesh Phogat's Strong Response
In response to Malik's assertions, Vinesh Phogat took to social media to convey her perspective without directly naming her accuser. She urged the public not to take everything at face value, stating, "There are always three sides to a story-yours, theirs, and the truth." During a media interaction, Vinesh firmly challenged the notion of "greed," saying, "What kind of greed? Ask them. As an athlete, if standing up for fellow athletes and my sisters is greed, then I consider it good. If it's greed that pushes us to bring medals for the country at the Olympics, then that greed will stay with us until our last breath."
This passionate defence underscores Vinesh's commitment to the integrity of the wrestling community and her determination to fight for the rights and recognition of her fellow athletes, as per media reports.
Support from Mahavir Phogat
Adding fuel to the fire, Mahavir Phogat, a revered Dronacharya awardee and Babita Phogat's father, defended his daughter against Malik's claims. He accused Malik of aligning her narrative with the Congress Party's rhetoric and reaffirmed Babita's commitment to supporting athletes rather than seeking power within the WFI. Mahavir stated, "Babita has no intention of becoming the president of the WFI; she has always been in support of the players." His comments reflect a broader sentiment among supporters of the Phogat sisters who believe that Malik's accusations are politically motivated.
Political Ramifications and Ongoing Tensions
This unfolding drama not only highlights the rifts among athletes but also mirrors the ongoing political tensions in Haryana, where wrestling and politics often intertwine. With the accusations flying and loyalties being tested, the wrestling community finds itself at a crossroads, as per media reports. The situation has prompted discussions about the integrity of the protest movement against sexual harassment in sports, and whether individual actions can overshadow the collective goal of justice.
Conclusion: A Divided Community
As the dust settles from these allegations, it is clear that the wrestling community in Haryana is deeply divided. Vinesh Phogat's robust defence of her actions and the counter-claims by Sakshi Malik signal that this controversy is far from over. The public discourse surrounding these events raises critical questions about integrity, motivation, and the future of athletes standing up for their rights, as per media reports.
With political figures weighing in and the wrestling community grappling with these revelations, the stakes are high as the story continues to unfold, leaving many to wonder what the next chapter holds for these iconic athletes. As the wrestling world watches closely, the emphasis on unity and the fight for justice remains more vital than ever.
