Vikas Swarup appointed as Indian high commissioner to Canada

He was appointed as MEA's spokesperson in 2015 replacing Syed Akbaruddin.

Ministry of External Affairs' official spokesperson Vikas Swarup was on Thursday appointed as the Indian high commissioner to Canada.

Swarup, who joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1986, has served in various Indian diplomatic missions, including Turkey, the United States, Ethiopia, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Japan.

He was appointed as MEA's spokesperson in 2015 replacing Syed Akbaruddin, who is now India's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York.

Swarup is also an author and is best known for his novel Q&A, which was adapted into a movie as Slumdog Millionaire.

Vikas Swarup was born in Allahabad in a family of lawyers. He did his schooling at Boys' High School and College, and pursued graduation at the Allahabad University.
