Vijayawada–Visakhapatnam Bullet Train to Link Cities in Under 2 Hours Across 350 km Corridor

India's plans to expand its high-speed rail network could soon bring a bullet train corridor to Andhra Pradesh. One of the proposals currently under study is a Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam bullet train, which aims to drastically reduce travel time between the two major coastal cities.

The proposal forms part of the Union government's broader high-speed rail vision announced in the 2026 Union Budget, which outlines several new corridors across the country, particularly in southern India.

What is the proposed project?

The project under consideration is a high-speed bullet train corridor between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, expected to cover roughly 350 kilometres. Trains on the route could run at speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour, which would cut travel time between the two cities to under two hours.

At present, journeys between the cities by conventional rail or road can take much longer.

Where will the corridor run?

According to preliminary plans being studied by railway authorities, the corridor may pass through key cities along the Andhra Pradesh coast, including Eluru, Rajamahendravaram and Kakinada.

If implemented, the line would not only connect Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam faster but also provide improved rail access to these growing urban centres.

Why is the project being planned?

Officials say the proposed corridor is intended to strengthen economic links between major cities, support faster passenger travel and boost regional development.

Improved rail connectivity can help industries, tourism and services by making it easier for people to travel between cities within a few hours.

When could it be implemented?

The project is still in the early planning stage. Government and railway sources say land identification and feasibility work are currently underway, which will help determine the route alignment and project details before further approvals are taken.

How does it fit into the national plan?

India is already working on its first bullet train corridor, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, which aims to cut travel time between the two cities to less than two hours. The project is currently expected to become operational around August 2027.

Alongside this, the government is examining several high-speed rail routes across the country, especially in South India.

Other rail corridors being discussed

Apart from the Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam bullet train, a semi high-speed rail corridor between Vijayawada and Kurnool is also being explored. Railway officials have already submitted a final location survey proposal to the Railway Board for the project.

Several other high-speed routes are also being discussed in southern India, including Hyderabad-Chennai via Amaravati, Hyderabad-Bengaluru via Kurnool and Anantapur, and Chennai-Bengaluru via Chittoor.

Earlier, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said high-speed rail projects announced in the Union Budget could significantly transform intercity travel in southern India.

He described the Bengaluru-Chennai-Hyderabad corridor as a key "diamond project", noting that such routes could boost economic growth and improve sectors like tourism and healthcare travel across the region.

According to the minister, the Bengaluru-Chennai high-speed line could reduce travel time to about one hour and 13 minutes, while the Bengaluru-Hyderabad route could take roughly two hours once completed.

What it could mean for Andhra Pradesh

If the Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam bullet train project moves forward, it could significantly improve connectivity across Andhra Pradesh. Faster rail links could make travel easier between Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and other major cities, while also strengthening connections with hubs such as Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru.

Officials believe such infrastructure projects could play an important role in supporting the state's economic growth and improving long-distance travel in the years ahead.
