The AICC had earlier given the ticket of Theog assembly constituency to Deepak Rathore, but at the last moment Stokes was asked to contest from this seat. Stokes is the MLA representing Theog in the outgoing assembly.

According to reports, Stokes had earlier declined to re-contest from Theog as Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh had expressed a desire to contest from the seat.

Singh will now be contesting elections from Arki constituency.

Stokes was elected to the House for the first time during a by-election in Theog in May 1974. She was re-elected from Theog in 1982, 1985, 1990 and 1998.
