The Allahabad High Court has dismissed international shooter Vartika Singh's plea challenging an MP/MLA court order rejecting her defamation complaint against Union Minister Smriti Irani. The Lucknow bench of the high court observed that while responding to journalists' questions, if the petitioner was said to be associated with the Congress party or the Gandhi family, it did not amount to defamation.

High Court Verdict: Vartika Singhs Defamation Case Against Smriti Irani Dismissed

Background of the Case

Vartika Singh had filed a case in the Sultanpur MP/MLA court, accusing Irani of defamation. The case was dismissed by the special court on October 21, 2022. Singh then challenged the MP/MLA court's order in the high court.

Vartika Singh's Allegations

Singh alleged that when journalists asked Irani about the allegations made by the petitioner against her personal secretary, Irani described the petitioner as a pawn of the Congress and said she had direct links with the Gandhi family.

High Court's Observations

Quoting Irani's entire conversation with journalists, the high court noted that before making the statement in question, Irani discussed other matters and did not even mention the petitioner's name during that time. The court further observed that when asked about the petitioner, Irani had mentioned the petitioner's alleged links with the Congress and also referred to her criminal history. The court found that criminal cases were indeed registered against the petitioner.

Court's Reasoning

The bench concluded that based on Irani's statements, she was criticizing a political party and had no intention of defaming the petitioner. The court held that the statements made by Irani were not defamatory in nature and dismissed Singh's plea.

The Allahabad High Court's decision brings an end to the legal battle between Vartika Singh and Smriti Irani over the alleged defamation case. The court's ruling highlights the importance of considering the context and intent of statements made during public discourse, particularly in the realm of political criticism.
