EU Leaders To Be Chief Guests As Republic Day Celebrations Highlight Vande Mataram Theme

The 2026 Republic Day celebrations in India centre on a Vande Mataram theme, featuring a torch relay, flypast and performances by military and educational bands nationwide. European Union leaders will attend the Delhi parade, underscoring international engagement while the plan outlines nationwide observances.

The Union government is preparing Republic Day celebrations built around a Vande Mataram theme, with a large-scale torch relay and a special flypast forming the centrepiece of the programme planned for January 26 at Kartavya Path.

Officials said the Ministry of Defence has instructed all agencies involved in the 77th Republic Day parade that this Vande Mataram focus should shape the design of the main ceremony, where European Union leaders will attend as chief guests.

Vande Mataram Republic Day celebrations and EU leaders’ participation

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa are expected in India next month, and will witness the Vande Mataram Republic Day celebrations from the ceremonial platform as honoured foreign dignitaries invited by the Centre.

There is no clarity yet on whether the decision to foreground Vande Mataram Republic Day celebrations will continue in future years, as officials noted that a similar attempt in 2023 to stress “Bharat” on invitations later shifted back to using “Republic of India” for some formal events.

Vande Mataram Republic Day celebrations across campuses and cantonments

Beyond the main Delhi parade, officials said the Centre wants Vande Mataram Republic Day celebrations reflected nationwide through musical performances by Army bands in cantonments, and by school, college and National Cadet Corps bands on campuses across India, in order to underline the national song’s role during the annual observance.

Officials stressed that detailed plans for the parade, flypast, torch relay and band performances are still being finalised, but confirmed that the Vande Mataram Republic Day celebrations framework has already been approved as the guiding theme for the 2026 national ceremony.
