Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains to Launch in January: First Semi-High-Speed 180 kmph Overnight Coaches Ready

The Indian Railways is all set to redefine long-distance overnight travel with the launch of its first Vande Bharat sleeper trains in January 2026. These trains will mark a significant shift from the existing daytime chair-car Vande Bharat services, offering semi-high-speed overnight travel at 180 kmph.

First-of-Its-Kind Sleeper Coaches

Developed by BEML in Bangalore and further refined at the Integrated Coach Factory (ICF), Perambur, the sleeper coaches are designed to combine the speed and modern amenities of Vande Bharat trains with the comfort needed for overnight journeys. The 16-coach prototype has completed extensive testing across multiple railway zones, ensuring both passenger comfort and operational safety.

Successful Multi-Zone Trials

The second sleeper rake underwent rigorous trials conducted by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). Testing focused on:

Braking performance and emergency stops

Stability and vibration control

Mechanical and electrical system reliability

Oscillation and Emergency Braking Distance (EBD) tests

The trials spanned three railway zones:

• North Central Railway: Mahoba-Khajuraho section
• West Central Railway: Sawai Madhopur-Kota-Nagda stretch
• Western Railway: Ahmedabad-Mumbai section

During testing, the train reached a top speed of 180 kmph, confirming its readiness as India's fastest overnight train option.

Meeting Overnight Travel Demand

The new sleeper trains address a long-standing gap in the Vande Bharat network. While the current fleet of 92 trains operates only during the day with chair-car coaches, the sleeper variant will cater specifically to night travelers, enhancing convenience on long routes.

Officials have confirmed that the first train with two sleeper coaches will be available for public service in January. The second train is already undergoing trials in Ahmedabad, and plans are underway to produce eight additional sleeper Vande Bharat trains by March 2026.

Future Routes and Expansion

Discussions are underway to introduce Vande Bharat sleeper services on high-demand long-distance routes, including Bangalore to Kanyakumari via Chennai, which would feature at least one sleeper coach. The aim is to provide faster, more comfortable overnight options, particularly on busy corridors where conventional trains take much longer.
