Indian Railways Postpones Vande Bharat Sleeper Launch After Quality Concerns Surface

The highly anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, originally expected to launch in October 2025, has been delayed after the Indian Railways Ministry identified multiple issues related to furnishings, design, and safety compliance. Despite granting operational clearance in principle, the ministry has directed that several key deficiencies must be rectified before the train can officially enter service.

According to a PTI report, the Railway Board has written to the Director General of Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the General Managers of all railway zones, pointing out problems in workmanship and interior finishing. The letter noted, "There are issues related to furnishing and workmanship at many places, including sharp edges and corners at berthing areas, window curtain handles, and pigeon pockets between berth connectors that cause cleaning challenges." The board has instructed immediate corrective measures in the current rake and design improvements in future ones.

Earlier, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had hinted at an October rollout for the sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat Express, but the recent findings have pushed the timeline further, with no confirmed debut date yet.

Safety and Operational Compliance Delays

While the Railway Board has given in-principle approval for the operation of the 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper rake, it has stressed that safety protocols and operational standards must be fully met before passenger services commence. The ministry has emphasized compliance with fire safety measures, installation of the Kavach 4.0 train protection system, reliable loco pilot-to-station communication, and proper maintenance of braking systems.

Additionally, it has instructed that the coach temperature be maintained at comfortable levels considering ambient weather and frequent door operations. The zones have also been told to deploy trained technical staff along routes and ensure that the semi-permanent coupler can be uncoupled within 15 minutes in case of emergencies.

The ministry's directives include continuous public address (PA) announcements instructing non-passengers to exit before departure, and pre-recorded safety announcements in three languages-regional, Hindi, and English- to enhance passenger safety awareness during travel.

Approval and Maintenance Process

The sanctioning process involves multiple levels of approval. After successful trials, the RDSO seeks final clearance from the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS), who then forwards recommendations to the ministry for operational approval. In the case of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, RDSO submitted its updated compliance on September 1, 2025, followed by the ministry's detailed instructions issued on October 28 to all railway zones.

The routes for the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are yet to be finalized. However, the Railway Ministry has directed zones to deploy dedicated maintenance teams and ensure adequate stocks of spares and consumables for smooth operations once the trains are rolled out.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper is a next-generation, long-distance, high-speed electric multiple unit (EMU) designed for passenger comfort and efficiency. Developed by Kinet, the prototype features a premium first-class cabin, ergonomic sleeper berths, reading lights, charging points, and bottle holders.

The train offers an operational speed of 160 kmph and a maximum speed of 180 kmph, showcasing a blend of luxury, innovation, and modern rail technology. A content creator who previewed the interiors described the train as "amazing," praising its sleek design and world-class comfort.
