Vande Bharat Sleeper Express in Kerala: Fare Chart, Ticket Prices and Why RAC, Waiting List Are Not Allowed

Indian Railways is preparing to roll out Vande Bharat Sleeper Express trains as a premium overnight travel option, with fares structured on distance-based slabs that place them in direct competition with airlines. Railway officials said ticket prices will begin at ₹960 for 3AC and go up to ₹13,300 for 1AC for long-distance journeys of up to 3,500 km.

The new sleeper services are being positioned as faster, reservation-only trains aimed at passengers seeking comfort and certainty. Unlike conventional long-distance trains, Vande Bharat Sleeper Express services will not allow RAC, waitlisted or partially confirmed tickets. Every passenger on board will travel only with a fully confirmed berth, available from the first day of the advance reservation period.

Vande Bharat Sleeper trains fares and class-wise slabs

Fares have been structured in clear distance brackets across 3AC, 2AC and 1AC classes. For trips up to 400 km, tickets are priced at ₹960 in 3AC, ₹1,240 in 2AC and ₹1,520 in 1AC. For travellers comparing modes, these figures place the trains directly against many low-cost flights.

Vande Bharat Sleeper trains quotas, rules and eligibility

Railway officials said the pricing has been designed to reflect premium amenities and faster travel times, while remaining competitive with low-cost air fares on similar routes.

Reservation rules and quotas remain unchanged

Existing reservation quotas will continue to apply on Vande Bharat Sleeper trains. Provisions for senior citizens, women, persons with disabilities and duty pass holders will follow the same rules as other premium services. No additional quotas have been introduced specifically for these trains.

Duty pass eligibility will mirror that of Rajdhani-class services. Only fully reimbursable passes will be accepted, while concessional and complimentary passes that do not qualify for reimbursement will not be valid. Normal child fares will apply, with no special concessions announced.

Digital ticketing and berth allocation

All ticket bookings for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will be handled through the central reservation system and digital platforms. The system will prioritise lower berth allocation for male passengers aged 60 years and above, and for female passengers aged 45 years and above, subject to availability at the time of booking.

When adults travel with children who do not require separate berths, existing allocation rules will continue. Lower berths may be allotted if available, but there will be no guaranteed provision.

Railway officials added that fares will rise gradually beyond the defined slabs to maintain uniform pricing across intermediate distances. With these features, Vande Bharat Sleeper Express trains are expected to redefine overnight rail travel by offering speed, comfort and booking certainty at premium rates.

The Railways is assessing options to strengthen connectivity between the two states ahead of the Kerala and Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026. The first Vande Bharat service in Kerala, launched in April 2023, was well received. For the Vande Bharat Sleeper, only confirmed tickets will be issued; RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) and waiting list tickets will not be available. The minimum booking distance for the service will be 400 kilometres.
