Vande Bharat Express Sleeper Train Soon: India’s First—Launch Date And Features

India's first Vande Bharat Express sleeper train is set to commence operations by the end of December. The initial set from Bengaluru's Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) will be dispatched on September 20. Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan confirmed this on social media, stating, "India's first Vande Bharat sleeper train is set to be dispatched from Bengaluru's BEML plant by September 20 and is expected to be operational by December."

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) are responsible for manufacturing the sleeper coaches of the Vande Bharat Express train. This new addition will enable passengers to travel long distances overnight on high-speed trains, enhancing the Indian Railways fleet.

Vande Bharat Express Sleeper Train: Key Features

The new Vande Bharat Express sleeper train will feature 16 coaches with a total of 823 berths. There will be 11 3AC coaches providing 611 berths, four 2AC coaches offering 188 berths, and one 1AC coach with 24 berths. Each coach will include reading lamps, charging outlets, a snack table, and a mobile/magazine holder.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced last year that the basic design of the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains had been approved and manufacturing had commenced. The trains will have stainless steel car bodies and GFRP interior panels, ensuring durability and comfort for passengers.

Speed Limit and Safety Features

The Vande Bharat sleeper trains will operate at a maximum speed of 160 kmph, with testing speeds reaching up to 180 kmph. These trains will be equipped with the Kavach collision avoidance system and crash-worthy passenger safety features. Additionally, compartments will comply with fire safety standards (EN 45545), and automatic doors will enhance convenience.

Currently, Vande Bharat Express trains only offer seating options. The introduction of sleeper coaches aims to provide a more comfortable experience for passengers traveling long distances by allowing them to sleep in berths. Reports suggest that these coaches will have wider berths, brighter interiors, and spacious toilets.

Designs and Launch Details

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a Vande Bharat train between Chennai and Mysuru via Bengaluru in November 2022, marking the first such train in South India. Presently, Bengaluru has Vande Bharat Trains connecting various regions like Dharwad, Belagavi, Hubballi, Chennai, Coimbatore, Mysuru, and Hyderabad.
