Vajpayee provided drinking water and ships to Islands
New Delhi,Aug 17: There are lots of development initiative and works to the credit of former Prime Minister of the country Atal Bihari Vajpayee that included quadrilateral highway project, telecom project, river-linking projects and many other initiative in different areas of governance. But it was Vajpayee who had first paid attention towards islands development and providing them basic infrastructure which was otherwise much behind from the mainland as far as development was concerned.
It was the A B Vajpayee government at the Centre that had first thought about providing drinking water to the people of island. A project was sanctioned under the Vajpayee-led government. The project started working in 2005 to provide drinking water to the people of Lakshdweep islands and some others as well.
Sources in the Lakshdweep administration said that it was Atal administration that formed Island Development Ideas. Vajpayee also announced 15 years of prospective plan and provided with Ships to Lakshdween administration and other islands as road was not being built in these islands but some development had to be done. The mainland got the gift of Golden Quadrilateral.
Sources in the Lakshdweep administration said that at present Only Lakshdweep has 26 ships at its disposal for the swift movement of people from one place to another. Many other development initiative was taken by the government led by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government.
There are total 1382 offshore identified islands of India that have huge potential to be utilized for growth and cohesive socio-economic development of the region and the nation in the bargain. They too get benefited from the development and enjoy the fruit of growth and contribute to the GDP. Development of these islands is also importance for their strategic locations when China is spreading its wing in Indian Ocean.
