The political crisis in Tamil Nadu is bringing together unlikely rivals. If MDMK chief Vaiko's visit to DMK supremo Karunanidhi's residence is a sign to go by, a divided AIADMK government is paving the way for a united opposition to gain strength.

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief Vaiko moved beyond a decade old standoff with DMK Chief Kalaignar Karunanidhi on Tuesday. In a surprising move, Vaiko visited Karunanidhi to 'enquire about his health'. Vaiko who has been a member, as well as MP from the DMK, walked out of the party owing to differences with Karunanidhi. His visit to Karunanidhi's residence is of great significance given the political scenario in Tamil Nadu.

Vaiko meets Karunanidhi: Will TN see united opposition v/s divided AIADMK

DMK working President M K Stalin in a tweet addressed Vaiko as 'brother' and claimed that he visited to check on Karunanidhi's health. For almost 10 years, Vaiko had stayed away from Karunanidhi and his party. In fact, there have been instances of DMK cadres attacking Vaiko and his party men in DMK bastions during his visits. Such was the rivalry between the two parties and its leaders.

M K Stalin has sought a floor test once again and has demanded that Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy prove his majority in the house. The demand comes at a time when 19 MLAs from the TTV Dinakaran camp have withdrawn their support to Palanisamy government. Stalin has claimed that 22 leaders from the AIADMK and independent candidates put together have no trust in their chief minister anymore.

In the case Edappadi Palanisamy loses a floor test, elections will become inevitable in Tamil Nadu. The AIADMK is already a divided house with DMK looking at its best chance to seize power if the state goes to polls. Added to it the strength from Vaiko's party, DMK is sure to surge ahead in numbers.

While it is too early to say if Vaiko and DMK will work together, the increasing friendship between leaders of both parties is no coincidence, given that the AIADMK government is in shambles.
