In a heart-wrenching incident, a boat capsized in Harni lake on the outskirts of Vadodara city in Gujarat on Thursday, January 18, leading to the unfortunate demise of twelve students and two teachers. The ill-fated boat was carrying a group of students and teachers on a picnic when the tragedy struck in the afternoon.

Rescue Efforts and Investigations Underway
Amidst the grief and shock, rescue operations were swiftly initiated, resulting in the successful rescue of 18 students and two teachers. However, the loss of precious lives has left the community deeply saddened. Gujarat Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, confirmed the tragic toll and revealed that only ten students on board were wearing life jackets, indicating potential negligence on the part of the organizers.
In response to the incident, an FIR has been registered under sections 304 and 308 of the Indian Penal Code, and two individuals have been apprehended. Teams have been formed to ensure the capture of any other individuals involved in this tragic event.
High-Level Probe Ordered
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the site late in the evening, accompanied by Minister Harsh Sanghavi. They toured Janvi Hospital and the state-run SSG Hospital to meet with survivors and offer condolences to the bereaved families. The Chief Minister closely monitored the ongoing rescue operation carried out by personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies.
Recognizing the need for a thorough investigation, the Gujarat government has ordered a high-level probe into the incident. The Vadodara district collector has been tasked with submitting an inquiry report within 10 days, focusing on the reasons and circumstances that led to the tragedy, potential negligence, and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Compensation and Support for Affected Families
In a gesture of solidarity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. Recognizing the immediate need for support, the Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased individual. Additionally, the injured would receive Rs 50,000.
The Gujarat Chief Minister also announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
Eyewitness Accounts and Community Response
As news of the tragedy spread, the area around Harni lake was filled with distressed parents and concerned citizens. Some individuals were fortunate enough to be rescued by local residents before agencies arrived at the scene. However, others were not as fortunate, leaving their loved ones to grieve and seek accountability.
Mukesh Khavdu, a youngster living near the lake, emerged as one of the first responders. He recounted jumping into the water to rescue four children from the overturned boat.
