423-Hour Ordeal Ends: How Uttarakhand Tunnel Rescue Operation Unfolded | WATCH VIDEO
The unwavering 17-day rescue operation bore fruit, ultimately saving the lives of 41 laborers hailing from various states across the country, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. This extensive rescue mission showcased a blend of cutting-edge technologies and the remarkable skills of rat-hole miners, who efficiently drilled through the remaining 12 meters in a remarkably short period. It served as a global lesson on integrating both machinery and human expertise for the success of such crucial rescue operations.

The ordeal began on November 12, the auspicious day of Diwali, when a section of the under-construction Silkyara tunnel collapsed, trapping 41 laborers inside. NHIDCL, the tunnel construction company, initially attempted to clear the debris to rescue the workers. However, due to subsequent collapses, an alternative approach was sought. Collaborating with various agencies, NHIDCL considered laying a path using a drilling machine.
By November 14, a drilling machine was deployed, but its effectiveness was limited. This left the rescuers grappling with devising a strategy to expedite the life-saving mission.
After this, the PMO intervened in the matter. An American Auger drilling machine was airlifted to Chinyalisaur and transported to Silkyara. Despite successfully carving out a 46-meter path, the machine encountered multiple obstacles, ultimately ceasing its operation. Moreover, the machine's weight led to vibrations in the tunnel, and during work, a distressing cracking sound emerged, signaling a potential risk due to tunnel cavity formation from a landslide.
Meanwhile, the government engaged several agencies to explore alternative routes. Entities like ONGC, SJVNL, THDC, and RVNL stepped in to prepare rescue routes in different sections of the tunnel. SJVNL and ONGC were tasked with vertical drilling at both ends, while THDC focused on the tunnel's construction towards Barkot. Additionally, the agency entrusted with constructing the edit tunnels was also brought into action.
Despite facing numerous obstacles such as metallic barriers and rocks blocking the American Auger drilling machine, hindering rescue efforts and dampening hopes, a shift to rat-hole mining techniques proved remarkably effective. This switch enabled the swift rescue of workers trapped for an agonizing 17 days.
Throughout the ordeal, challenges persisted. Yet, the government ensured the well-being of the workers by addressing their food, oxygen, and health needs within the tunnel. Amidst complaints of ailments like stomach aches and vomiting, a comprehensive medical team was swiftly dispatched to Silkyanra. Care wasn't just limited to physical health but extended to mental well-being, with continuous efforts to bolster the workers' morale. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Union Ministers, and other officials maintained constant communication with the workers.
Several high-ranking officials, including Central Ministers General VK Singh and Nitin Gadkari, personally visited Silkyara to oversee the workers' condition. VK Singh even stayed on-site to monitor progress. Chief Minister Dhami relocated his office to Matli, a village close to Silkyara, from where he closely supervised operations and made frequent visits. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also monitored the rescue operation's advancements closely, leaving no stone unturned in arranging necessary facilities. A concerted effort involving the Indian Air Force, Indian Army, and experts in tunnel technology, including international figures like Arnold Dix, was marshaled to aid the operation.
The government spared no effort in ensuring essential provisions and improving communication channels. BSNL set up a telephone exchange for continuous contact between workers and their families. Mock drills by NDRF and SDRF were conducted using pipes for potential evacuation, while a 45-bed hospital was swiftly erected in Chinyalisaur for immediate medical attention. AIIMS in Rishikesh remained on standby to cater to any post-tunnel health concerns. Efforts were made to enhance the supply of essentials to sustain the trapped workers during these precarious circumstances.
In the face of fluctuating fortunes, prayers became a refuge. Despite the setback caused by the removal of the temple of Baba Boukhnag, revered in the area, a makeshift temple was built by the construction company to rectify the situation. Prayers and rituals to Baba Boukhnag persisted throughout the rescue campaign, as locals fervently hoped for its success.
Amidst the challenges and setbacks, the authorities, with the support of the Indian Army, utilised a combination of modern technology and traditional rat-hole mining techniques to successfully rescue the 41 workers trapped in the tunnel for a grueling 17 days.
Rat-hole mining, a traditional practice in some parts of India, involves digging narrow tunnels to extract minerals. After weeks of uncertainty, a team of six soldiers, armed with only their hands and shovels, tirelessly dug through the remaining debris, ultimately reaching the trapped workers.
